Tech jobs you can get without a degree (and how to land one)
October 20, 2026 · 7 min read
A degree can open doors, but plenty of tech roles care far more about what you can do than where you studied. If you're in high school, at a bootcamp or teaching yourself, these are the roles where skills, projects and persistence can carry you in.
Roles where proof beats credentials
- IT support and help desk: troubleshooting and communication are the job. Many security and cloud engineers started here.
- QA tester: careful, curious people who find bugs before users do. Automation skills grow it into a developer role.
- Web developer: a live portfolio of sites you built for real clients speaks louder than a transcript.
- UX/UI designer: a strong case-study portfolio is the hiring signal.
- SOC analyst: home labs, competitions and entry-level certifications are common entry routes.
- Customer success and implementation specialist: technical enough to help customers, people-focused enough to keep them happy.
- Technical writer: clear writing plus enough technical understanding to explain products.
What employers look for instead of a degree
When there's no diploma to lean on, hiring managers look for evidence: something you built or fixed, a clear explanation of how you did it, and signs that you learn quickly. A single strong project with real users or measurable results beats a long list of online course certificates.
A 5-step plan to land one
- Pick one target role. 'Something in tech' is too broad to plan for.
- Learn the core skills for that role from free resources, consistently, a few hours a week.
- Build one flagship project that matches the role, and document it publicly.
- Talk to three people already doing the job, and ask how they got in.
- Apply to a focused list with a resume tailored to each posting, and practice interviews out loud.
Certifications: helpful, not magic
Entry-level certifications can help in IT, networking and security because they show you know the fundamentals. Treat them as a supplement to hands-on proof, not a replacement for it.
