When do tech internships open? A timeline for high school and college students
October 20, 2026 · 6 min read
One of the most common mistakes students make is waiting until spring to look for a summer internship. At many larger tech companies, recruiting for the following summer starts months earlier. Timelines vary by company and change from year to year, so always check each program's page, but the general pattern is worth knowing.
College internships: the general pattern
- Late summer to fall: many large companies open applications for the following summer.
- Fall to winter: interviews and offers for those early programs.
- Winter to spring: smaller companies, startups and local organizations post more roles.
- Rolling: some roles stay open until filled, so applying early still helps.
High school opportunities
High school internships, pre-college programs and summer tech programs often open in the fall or winter and close in the winter or early spring. Local opportunities with nonprofits, small businesses and university labs often come through direct outreach rather than a formal posting.
A month-by-month plan
- Now: start (or finish) one flagship project and get your resume ready.
- Two to three months before applications open: build a target list and talk to people in the roles you want.
- When applications open: apply early, with a resume tailored to each posting.
- While you wait: practice technical and behavioral interviews every week.
- If you don't land one: build a bigger project, contribute to open source, or find a local opportunity. It all counts as experience next cycle.
